THE POWER OF AFFIRMATIONS

Whether you think you will succeed or whether you think you won't succeed – you're right! What you think actually becomes your reality. What your mind can conceive and believe, your body will achieve.

There is a Law of Attraction that is extremely fair. It's not enough to want a new job; you have to expect it to happen! It's not an easy or even pleasant process at times. You can never have doubts about your ability to become the person you were put on this earth to become. You need to maintain a very positive attitude throughout the entire process.

Envision yourself already working in a job that would make you happy. While doing so, write down the following:

  • What type of job are you doing?
  • What are the functions of your job?
  • What salary are you earning?
  • What is your environment?
  • What type of boss do you have?
  • What are your advancement possibilities?

Now write down a Positive Affirmation you will read daily. Start this affirmation with the words, "I'm so happy because…" Write down the type of opportunity that would make you happy and read it several times each day, picturing yourself actually doing that job.

Don't dwell on what you have experienced to date. You can't change what has happened in the past, you can't change what you've done so far today, but you can change what you do from this moment forward.

RESUME SERVICES
The past is in the past. This should go without saying. Any jobs you have held previously and do not hold anymore should be written in past tense. The projects and accomplishments are over (or at least your role in them), so it doesn't make sense to talk about them in the present tense as if they were still going on. As you update your resume in the future, make sure you go back and revise your previous position so it is in past tense.

Follow-Up Is Critical

Employers like to hire individuals who are confident in their ability to do the job and are also sincerely interested in working for them! If it comes down to a difficult decision of who to hire, they will go with the person who they feel really wants to work for them! How do you become that person? You become that person with your follow-up process.

The following is a list of the various times when you need to establish a follow-up system:

  • After you send a resume to a prospective employer. In your cover letter, you should state you will follow-up by phone within a week. Make sure you do exactly that!
  • If a phone or face-to-face interview is scheduled, you want to call the evening before the interview to confirm the interview. This shows your prospective employer that you are organized and thorough.
  • After your interview, you want to send a thank you letter to each individual you met. Ask everyone for their business cards so you have the correct spelling, title and address.
  • You need to follow-up after each interview, to keep the process moving forward.
  • When you provide a list of references, make sure you follow-up with each reference so they will be expecting the call.
  • When you get a job offer, you want to send a thank you note expressing your enthusiasm about their offer.

Understand time kills deals! If you have been pending for a much longer time than anticipated, chances are they have screened you out and are still interviewing to find a better fit. Most employers won't tell you that you have been screened out until they hire someone for the job. Often, they forget to let you know when the position is filled.

How to Handle Frustration and Fear

A job search is not a comfortable or enjoyable process for most job seekers. If you have been in a job search for a period of time, frustration and the fear of the unknown can sabotage your job search process.

STAY POSITIVE

  • Limit the time you spend watching, reading or listening to the news. Remember good news does not sell advertising
  • Limit the time you allow yourself to worry – it truly is waster energy
  • Write down positive affirmations in the present tense and read them daily
  • Write down your highlight of each and every day
  • Conduct a reality check – and understand you WILL find a job!
  • Meditate at least 15 minutes daily

CONTROL YOUR FRUSTRATION AND FEAR

  • It is important to remember the definition of F.E.A.R. - False Events Appearing Real
  • Understand fear can negatively impact your health
  • Avoid political news that is basically fear-mongering
  • Realize frustration and fear will negatively impact your networking effort
  • Volunteer to help others less fortunate than yourself
  • Stay as busy as possible, viewing your search as your full-time job

When you learn to minimize your frustration and fear, you will be more successful in your job search.

Who Provides the Best References?

The best references are provided by individuals who:

  • Were one of your supervisors
  • Are aware of your past accomplishments
  • Understand the impact your accomplishments had on past companies
  • Willing to make themselves available to provide reference checks
  • Have been prepped by you, to understand the position
  • Like you and have your best interest at heart

Co-workers are not considered a good source for a reference check. It's also important for you to realize that employers do verify the title of the person you list as a reference. If you misrepresent someone's title, this is considered dishonest and you will be eliminated from consideration.

If a hiring authority wants a reference from a current employer, you may consider providing the name of a customer or vendor, someone who is aware of the quality of your work. Explain that you can't jeopardize your current position.

Human Resource Departments often only provide names, title, and salary verification. If you reference would be average at best, this could be the best reference to provide.

The person to provide the best reference check varies depending on your personal situation. When in doubt, have someone check your references so you don't wonder what is being said. You will know exactly what references are being provided.

Learn to Properly Prep Your References
The greatest mistake you can make is to list an individual as one of your references, without informing them of the exact opportunity you are seeking. Most people are more than willing to help you in your efforts to find a job. However, if they don't know what is most important to this particular company or person, they can actually cause you to be screened out from consideration.

You references know who you were in the past. Most references have no idea of what positions or industries you're currently targeting in your job search efforts. The minute you provide the names and contact information of your references, you need to call your references and provide the following information.

  • Name of the person who might be calling them
  • Title of the person
  • Name of the company
  • Title of the opportunity you are seeking
  • Areas of expertise most important to this employer
  • Core values or company culture of this employer
  • Any additional inside information that can provide your references with insight of the top priorities of this hiring authority
  • Salary range if known

You will never BORE anyone into Hiring You!

It is easy to get into a rut when you're conducting your job search. Your routine might get monotonous after several calls and cause you to sound monotone or boring. You do have to come across articulate and polished, but every day in a job search is "bring your personality to your job search day!" You can utilize scripts when making follow up calls, but you don't want to sound staged. Your personality must shine through so the potential hiring authority can determine if you would fit in with their company culture and the individuals in a specific department.

In addition to required credentials including experience, education, skills and stability you must be memorable. Hiring authorities hire qualified candidates that they also like. They will spend most of their waking hours at work which is why they put a premium on finding someone they enjoy. They also understand that one bad hire can hurt morale.

In every contact you make whether verbal or written, come across enthusiastic, interested, passionate and adaptable. Think of a day in your past where you felt the best about yourself. Think about when you were the most confident and happiest. It is THAT person who must conduct your job search each and every day, if you want results.

MUST READ
When you attach a cover letter or resume to an application form; make sure you have customized them to fit the job you are seeking. An employer is going to screen you out if your cover letter and resume do not appear to target the type of opportunity they are offering. The time you spend customizing your information is well spent and will result in scheduling more interviews!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

If you want to improve your networking efforts, it is important to learn how to "work a room or event." Each time you find yourself in a group setting, there are endless networking opportunities. I'd like to address some common questions.

HOW TO I APPROACH PEOPLE?
It is best to approach people who are standing alone or in a smaller group. Smile and ask if you can join them and comment on something you have in common.

HOW DO I BECOME MEMORABLE?
It's important to be lighthearted, fun and share interesting stories. You should be energetic, a great listener and engaging.

HOW CAN I BE MORE SELF-CONFIDENT?
Your self-confidence will increase if you feel you have prepared. Read the paper, magazines, trade publications and have three to five stories, news comments or questions you will ask prepared in advance. The more you practice having casual conversations, the more confident you will become.

HOW CAN I OVERCOME MY SHYNESS?
It is comforting to know that over 90% of people describe themselves as shy, especially in a networking situation. Observe the behavior and conversations of outgoing people you admire. Consider joining a book club or toastmasters to overcome your shyness.

HOW DO I MOVE FROM SMALL TALK?
Small talk is how you begin to develop rapport and is most important in networking. Let the other person talk about themselves and they will like you more and be more apt to add you to their network when the conversation turns to more serious topics.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET A BUSINESS CARD?
Offer your business card and then ask "Do you have a card?" If you are a full time job seeker your card should list your contact information on the front and list facts on the back about your experience and accomplishments.

Networking is not different than any skills. You will learn how to work a room and become a great networker with practice.

RESUME TIP FOR THE WEEK
"References available upon request," or the more archaic practice of listing them on your resume, is long gone. Employers expect that if they ask you for references, you will provide them. Including them on your resume wastes valuable space that you could use for more important details. Keep your references on a separate sheet of paper that you can present when asked.

DON'T WASTE TIME WHEN NEGOTIATING

You don't want to waste your time or the time of the hiring authorities, if their company is not going to pay you what you're worth. You need to understand how employers set their salary levels and then adjust your job search.

If a higher salary is not within a company's budget, they are not in a position to offer you more money. Companies normally don't bring in a new employee who had a higher level than the person leaving the job, unless they are enhancing the level of responsibilities.

It is wise to understand:

  • Average compensation being paid by similar companies in their industry
  • Average pay for someone with your experience
  • How strong your credentials and experience match the criteria of the position

Conducting this research will stop you from wasting time pursuing companies that can't provide the compensation you require.

RESUME | CV TIP FOR THE WEEK
If you are applying for more than one job at the same company, tailoring your resume | CV is a must. Carefully read through the job opening and adjust the summary of qualifications and core competencies sections to highlight what each position is looking for. Submitting the same resume | CV multiple times can make it look like you are spamming the system and simply applying to anything that looks relevant. Modifying your resume | CV accordingly shows that you took the time to evaluate why and how you would be a good fit.

Who Has The Most Difficult Time Finding a Job?

More mature job seekers think it's harder to find a job after 50, recent grads think it's harder to find a job with no experience, people returning to the workforce think it's hardest for them to find a job and individuals changing careers often feel it's impossible to make the change.

The truth of the matter is there are jobs for all four groups just described. Many employers prefer to hire more mature candidates because of the wealth of expertise, maturity and dependability. There are companies who prefer to mold and train their own and look to hire recent grads. Individuals returning to the workforce often have lower salary requirements and there are transferrable skills when someone is changing their job target.

If you believe it is harder for you to find a job for these or any other reasons, you could be sabotaging your own Job Search. If you think you CAN find a job or if you think you CAN'T find a job – YOU'RE RIGHT! Your expectations have a great impact on how you conduct your search.

To gain momentum in your search, you need to CHANGE the way you conduct your search. You can't keep doing things the same way and expect different results. Remember, currently over 50% of job seekers are finding their job through networking. The next best way to find a job is to market yourself directly to hiring authorities. Spend the majority of your time doing these two things and you will begin to enjoy results.

If you are not sure how to network or directly market yourself to hiring authorities, complete the steps in our Career Portal under PREPARE, SEARCH & CONNECT and INTERVIEW. Our Career Portal shares inside secrets only utilized by recruiters throughout the sixteen step process for finding a job. Follow the advice offered throughout the steps and you will be celebrating your new job sooner rather than later!
